Your First Visit
We want your first visit at Delaware Smile Center to be the first of many. Your initial appointment will consist of either a consultation or a comprehensive exam. A comprehensive exam includes a full series of x-rays as well as diagnostic records.

Digital X-Rays
Delaware Smile Center is committed to offering you the finest and safest techniques available in dentistry today. All of our x-ray units utilize digital technology, drastically decreasing radiation exposure by 90%. Digital x-ray images appear instantly on a computer screen for you and the dentist to see. Unlike traditional x-rays, digital x-rays can be enhanced, providing the dentist with greater detail to aid in proper diagnosis. Digital x-rays are fast, convenient and require no harmful pollutants to process.

Dental Magnification
Dental magnification glasses are changing the way dentists practice today. The fact of the matter is that even the best “normal” vision cannot compare to vision assisted by magnification and illumination. Studies have repeatedly shown that magnification significantly increases the precision and quality of dental care. You can rest assured that both doctors at Delaware Smile Center utilize magnification technology for all dental procedures.

Patient Comfort
Quite often patients find themselves straining to keep their mouths open during lengthy dental procedures. At Delaware Smile Center, patient comfort is our number one priority. That is why we use the Isolite Dryfield Illuminator, the only dental device that provides the dentist with constant illumination and isolation while at the same time acting as a cushion for your jaws, allowing you to keep your mouth open without tiring your muscles.

Dental Insurance
Delaware Smile Center wants to help you receive the maximum reimbursement to which you are entitled by your insurance company. We are happy to process your insurance claims in order for you to receive this maximum benefit. We will also provide dental x-rays and a written diagnostic report should your insurance company have any questions regarding the services provided. Please remember your deductible and estimated portion are due at the time of service.
At all times you can be confident that we will provide you with our best services regardless of the limitations imposed by your insurance coverage. To do otherwise would violate our contract with you - a contract we are obliged to honor.

Financial Arrangements
Delaware Smile Center is committed to providing you with the highest quality dental care. For your convenience we accept cash, credit card (Visa and Mastercard) and personal checks. Interest-free financing options are available through Care Credit. Apply for Care Credit online or in our office.

Oral Health
So often we take our teeth for granted, but a healthy mouth is key to living each day comfortably. The oral cavity consists of the teeth, gums and their supporting tissues. It is this amazing structure that allows us to speak our minds, enjoy our food and express our emotions.
A healthy mouth contributes to a healthy body. Many serious illnesses such as diabetes, cancer and Crohn’s disease show their first symptoms in the mouth. This is why it is so important to have routine dental exams.
Most people tend to think of cavities or crooked teeth when they hear the words “dental problems.” Despite its prevalence, the majority of people who suffer from gum disease are unaware that they have it. Gum disease is an infection caused by plaque build-up around the teeth and is a common cause of tooth loss after the age of 35. The first stage of gum disease is gingivitis. Gingivitis causes the gums to bleed and swell. Periodontitis is the more serious form of gum disease, and often progresses without pain. If left untreated, it can result in permanent destruction of bone surrounding the teeth. If teeth are not supported by enough bone, they eventually become loose and either fall out or cause a localized infection.
It cannot be emphasized enough that proper brushing and flossing are extremely important in fighting gum disease. But only your dentist and hygienist can clean the plaque that builds up underneath your gums, so keeping up with your regular 6-month cleanings is essential to maintaining a healthy mouth.

Oral Cancer
This year over 34,000 Americans will be diagnosed with cancer of the mouth and throat. It will take the lives of more than 8,000 people, killing about 1 person every hour. Of the 34,000 people diagnosed with oral cancer, only half will live more than five years. Part of the reason why oral cancer is so deadly is that it is usually discovered late in its development. This is why it is so important to see your dentist regularly and get screened for oral cancer.
Both tobacco use and alcohol consumption are high risk factors for developing oral cancer. People who smoke and drink are 15 times more likely to develop oral cancer than those who don’t because the two risk factors act synergistically.
Notify your doctor or dentist right away if you notice any of the following:
-A sore lesion in your mouth that does not heal within two weeks
-A lump or thickening in your mouth
-A white or red patch on your gums, tongue, tonsil or lining of the cheek
-A sore throat or a feeling that something is stuck in your throat
-A change in the sound of your voice
-Difficulty swallowing or chewing
-Difficulty moving your tongue or jaw
-Numbness in your tongue or any area of the mouth
-Swelling of your jaw or any area of the mouth

These symptoms can be caused by other, less serious problems, but seeing your doctor is the only way to know for sure. More information on oral cancer can be found at www.oralcancerfoundation.org
