Healthy Teeth and Gums For Life

"The first procedure I had done here was a root canal. It was nothing like I had experienced in the past! The biggest thing for me was there was no pain - and let me tell you, I've had a fair amount of dental trauma in the past. Now I'm taking care of my teeth and I don't mind coming back for my check-ups!" - Tom S.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

At Delaware Smile Center, we believe that you, the patient, are the most important part of your dental care team. We believe that an educated patient is an empowered patient.

Your questions are important, and that is why we are pleased to offer a selection of some of the most common questions we receive. Of course, if your question isn’t answered here, please feel free to ask us!

Do dental implants hurt?

Quite simply, no! Local anesthetic is used to eliminate any discomfort at the time of implant placement. If desired, patients can elect to undergo sedation for the length of the procedure. Minor soreness may develop on the day the implants are placed. In such cases, medication is easily prescribed to relieve any discomfort. Most patients will resume their normal activities the very same day that the implant is placed!

Am I healthy enough for dental implants?

In general, most people qualify for receiving dental implants. However, some medical conditions may contraindicate the placement of implants. Because of this, it is extremely important to review your complete medical history with our dentists.

Do I have to see a different doctor for the implant procedure?

Delaware Smile Center offers a “one doctor approach” to placing dental implants. Drs. Sohaib and Saqib Usmani have undergone advanced training in dental implant surgery as well as the prosthetic restoration of dental implants. They will be able to walk you through each step involved in creating a healthy and beautiful smile.

Am I too old for orthodontic care?

At Delaware Smile Center, we believe you are never too old to have a beautiful, healthy smile. We offer several orthodontic care options that are perfect for adults including the 6 Month Braces technique and Invisalign. Both options will allow you to quickly and comfortably transform your smile and straighten your teeth to improve both the appearance and health of your mouth. Call today to schedule an appointment with our orthodontist Dr. Sophia Usmani, and find out which orthodontic options are right for you.

Do you provide preventive care as well as cosmetic dentistry?

We are here to help you have a beautiful smile. We not only help transform your smile, we also help you maintain it. This includes preventive care check-ups and cleanings to prevent cavities, decay, and gum disease. We will discuss with you what you can do at home to keep your teeth and gums healthy and beautiful as well as provide hands-on demonstrations of good brushing and flossing technique to help your new smile last for the rest of your life.

I'm concerned about my receding gums. What can you do to help me?

Receding gums are often one of the first symptoms of gum disease. Treating your periodontal (gum) disease is an important first step in stopping the progression of gum recession. For moderate to severe gum recession, we offer cosmetic root coverage through gingival grafting. This procedure not only improves the appearance of your teeth, but prevents damage to the roots and relieves pain and sensitivity. Call Delaware Smile Center today to find out more about this procedure and to schedule a consultation with one of our skilled dentists.

I need orthodontic care, but I really don't want braces. What are my options?

Schedule an appointment for a consultation with our orthodontist Dr. Sophia Usmani. We have a number of orthodontic treatments available that don't require traditional bracket-and-wire braces, including the popular Invisalign system, which uses a series of clear, plastic aligners to gently and comfortably move your teeth into their correct positions.

Can my teenager get Invisalign?

Invisalign has developed a version of their popular orthodontic care system specifically for teenagers called Invisalign Teen.

Teenagers are often self-conscious about their appearance, and Invisalign Teen offers a way to straighten your teenager's teeth almost invisibly with a series of clear, plastic aligners. Your teenager won't have to go through the hassle of trying to brush and floss around brackets, and since the aligners are removed for eating, you can continue to encourage your teenager to eat all the fresh, healthy foods needed for a growing body including apples and corn on the cob! Schedule an appointment with Delaware Smile Center today to get started.

Do you provide orthodontic care for children and teenagers?

Good dental care starts early, and this includes orthodontic treatment. Sometimes, even young children need orthodontic treatment for a variety of concerns. At Delaware Smile Center, we are happy to help children as young as 7 years old get a great start on a beautiful, healthy smile. Call today to schedule an appointment for your child or teenager.

I haven't seen a dentist in years, and I'm afraid that my dental care will hurt. Is sedation dentistry right for me?

Fear of the dentist is more common than you might think. We completely understand, and we will do everything possible to make your visits to Delaware Smile Center as comfortable and low-stress as possible. Call us today to schedule a consultation with one of our excellent and compassionate dental care providers. We will discuss the variety of sedation dentistry techniques available, including IV sedation dentistry, and help you determine which one is right for you. Dental care is important for your overall health, and we want you to feel happy and confident getting the care you need.

Do 6 Month Braces really only take six months?

For most of our patients, six months is the average amount of time needed for 6 Month Braces to completely transform their smile. If your teeth need more work than average, your treatment may take seven or eight months. Of course, if you need less work than average, you may only need braces for five months!

Call and schedule a consultation with our skilled orthodontist or one of our talented dentists to find out what 6 Month Braces can do for you.

I'm about to get married, and I'm embarrassed by my yellow teeth. How long will professional teeth whitening take?

At Delaware Smile Center, we exclusively use the Kör Whitening system. To get started, call our office and schedule an appointment. We will begin by making molds of your teeth to create the customized trays for the product. Before you take the product home, we will discuss the procedure with you thoroughly and make sure all your questions are answered. Your teeth whitening will take place over the next two weeks while you sleep. After those two weeks, you return to our office for a final visit. At that time, we will discuss maintenance with you.

I'm interested in dental veneers. Am I a good candidate?

If you have fairly good oral health and are willing to commit to this permanent solution for discolored or damaged teeth, you are probably a good candidate for dental veneers. Once the veneers are placed, you will need to practice good oral hygiene habits to keep your veneers in great shape and prevent damage or decay from forming behind the veneer. If you smoke, or if you grind or clench your teeth, talk to us about other options for improving the appearance of your teeth. Call today to schedule a consultation to find out if dental veneers are right for you.

Will other people be able to tell that I have dental crowns or dental implants?

Modern dental technology allows us to create crowns to fit over your own teeth or dental implants that are indistinguishable from natural teeth. Older crowns used to leave an identifiable dark line right at the gum line, but new methods of creating crowns have eliminated that cosmetic flaw. While people who know you well will likely notice the significant improvement in the appearance of your smile, they won't know specifically what has changed unless you choose to tell them.

Do I really need to worry about crooked teeth?

If you have crooked, twisted, or overlapping teeth, or if you have problems with your bite alignment, we recommend calling Delaware Smile Center to discuss how orthodontics can help you.

Even if your teeth don't bother you from a cosmetic standpoint, crooked teeth can lead to significant dental problems down the line. For instance, teeth that are crooked or overlapping are difficult to brush properly, which can lead to cavities and decay. If your teeth are crowded, you might have problems flossing, which will eventually lead to periodontal (gum) disease. Because gum disease and dental decay are linked to serious health problems such as heart disease and diabetes, improperly aligned teeth affect your overall health.
