How Does Invisalign® Treatment Work?
The Invisalign® system is designed to gently and progressively shift the teeth into a more desirable alignment using a series of custom-designed aligner trays. Before starting Invisalign® treatment, Dr. Usmani will take a 3D digital scan of your teeth. These will be used to create the aligners. Each set of the clear, plastic aligner trays will be worn for approximately 2 weeks, at which point you will swap to the next set in the series. Over time, the subtle differences in the aligners will guide the teeth into their new positions.
Unlike traditional braces, Invisalign® does not involve any brackets or wires that need to be tightened. This means patients have to make significantly less visits to the dentist’s office. On average, Invisalign® treatment typically takes 12-18 months. Once the initial treatment is complete, a retainer will be provided to help protect your newly straightened smile.
How Long Does Invisalign® Take?
Invisalign® treatment time varies depending on the complexity of the case and how consistently the aligners are worn. On average, many patients complete treatment within 12 to 18 months. Some mild cases may take less time, while more involved alignment issues may require a longer course of treatment.
Each set of aligners is usually worn for about two weeks before progressing to the next stage. Regular check-ins with Dr. Usmani help ensure that treatment is staying on track. After active treatment is complete, retainers are typically recommended to help maintain the new alignment and protect your results.
Does Invisalign® Hurt?
Invisalign® is designed to move teeth gradually and comfortably. While most patients experience mild pressure or soreness when starting a new set of aligners, this sensation is typically short-lived and generally indicates that the aligners are working as intended.
Unlike traditional braces, Invisalign® does not involve brackets or wires that can irritate the cheeks and gums. Any discomfort is usually manageable with over-the-counter pain relief and tends to fade within a few days. Dr. Usmani closely monitors progress and can make adjustments to keep treatment as comfortable as possible.
