Healthy Teeth and Gums For Life

"The first procedure I had done here was a root canal. It was nothing like I had experienced in the past! The biggest thing for me was there was no pain - and let me tell you, I've had a fair amount of dental trauma in the past. Now I'm taking care of my teeth and I don't mind coming back for my check-ups!" - Tom S.

Dental Implants

Dental implants are an innovative procedure that replaces missing teeth with natural-looking crowns to restore functionality and give you a healthy, complete smile. While most dentists have to refer their dental implant patients out to oral surgeons, the dentists at Delaware Smile Center are able to complete the entire implant process, from placing the titanium implants to restoration with crowns, right here in our office.

Whether you need a single dental implant or you are in need of full-mouth restoration, you can trust Delaware Smile Center to give you the very best care and results. Not only does Dr. Sohaib Usmani teach implant dentistry at Christiana Care’s General Practice Residency, both our dentists are able to perform advanced procedures such as bone grafts and sinus lifts that can increase the likelihood that implants are an option for you.

What Are Dental Implants?

Dental crowns have been in use for a long time. Originally, they were designed to fit over an existing tooth to either protect a weakened or severely damaged tooth or to cover a broken tooth. Using state-of-the-art dental technology, dental crowns can now also be placed over a titanium “root” that is placed where you are missing a tooth to create the appearance and function of a flawless smile.

Why Should Missing Teeth Be Replaced?

Aside from the cosmetic concerns that go along with missing teeth, an incomplete smile also poses a threat to the rest of your teeth and even your overall health. When you are missing teeth, the rest of your teeth are put under additional stress as they try to compensate. This leads to additional wear and tear, which can cause erosion, fracturing, and eventually, additional tooth loss. Over time, the bone in your jaw may become weaker and atrophy unless your missing teeth are replaced.

Missing teeth can have a serious impact on your body’s overall health as well. When you have missing teeth, you may find yourself avoiding fresh, healthy foods in favor of softer, processed foods that are easier to eat. Poor nutrition leads to a number of health concerns. Missing teeth increase your risk of periodontal disease, which has been linked to serious health conditions including heart disease and diabetes.

Additionally, missing teeth can damage your self-esteem and self-image. Although it shouldn’t happen, people do make judgments of others based on their appearance, and missing teeth have an unfortunate social stigma. You may be passed over for a promotion that you deserve and are qualified for, and people may treat you differently because you have missing teeth. This may eventually lead to depression and a lower quality of life.

What are the Advantages of Dental Implants?

Dental implants are a permanent solution to the problem of missing teeth. Because they function just like your own natural teeth, they can stop bone loss in its tracks and allow you to comfortably eat all the foods you enjoy. Unlike dentures, you never have to worry about implants slipping or falling, and caring for your implants is as simple as following a regular brushing and flossing routine and coming to see us twice yearly for regular checkups and cleanings.
