Education and Background

Dr. Usmani was born in Bear, Delaware and always knew he wanted his career to bring him back to serve the community that shaped him. For his undergraduate studies he attended Widener University and the University of Montana, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in 2021. He then went on to earn his Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree from the University of Michigan School of Dentistry in 2025, one of the nation’s top-ranked dental programs known for its rigorous clinical training.

Following dental school, Dr. Usmani completed a General Practice Residency at Christiana Care in 2026, where he gained advanced, hands-on experience treating a wide range of dental conditions and complex cases. This residency training sharpened his clinical skills across virtually every corner of general dentistry, from routine preventative dental care to more advanced restorative dentistry procedures.

Dr. Usmani’s decision to pursue dentistry wasn’t sparked by a single moment in a classroom, but by witnessing the emotional impact dental care can have on a person’s life. While shadowing early in his academic career, he watched a patient receive several new crowns and, upon seeing her reflection, begin to cry tears of joy. She explained that she used to hide her smile and cover her mouth when she laughed, embarrassed by the way her teeth looked. She left that appointment beaming, no longer self-conscious. That moment stayed with Dr. Usmani and ultimately shaped the course of his career; he realized that dentistry isn’t just about oral health, it’s about restoring confidence and giving people back their smiles.

Continuing Dental Education

Dr. Usmani is committed to staying current with the latest advancements in dental care through ongoing continuing education. He has completed advanced training through Western Surgical and Sedation, where he studied moderate sedation techniques designed to help patients with dental anxiety feel calm, comfortable, and safe throughout treatment. As Dr. Usmani continues to grow in his career, our skilled general dentist in Middletown, DE plans to pursue further educational opportunities that align with his interests in sedation dentistry, dental sleep medicine, and other advanced dental techniques.

Philosophy of Care

At the core of Dr. Usmani’s practice philosophy is a simple but powerful goal: helping patients feel comfortable enough to prioritize their oral health without fear, pain, or judgment. He understands that many people carry real anxiety about visiting the dentist, and he makes it his mission to create a calm, welcoming environment where that anxiety can fade away.
Dr. Usmani’s approach emphasizes preventative dentistry and early intervention, catching potential issues before they become bigger problems and addressing them with the least invasive treatment possible. He believes strongly in taking time to understand each patient as a whole person, not just a set of teeth, and in explaining every recommendation clearly so patients understand not only what he’s doing, but why.
Dental technology plays a key role in how Dr. Usmani communicates with patients. He’s especially fond of intraoral cameras, which allow patients to see exactly what he sees during an exam, making treatment recommendations easier to understand and trust. He also incorporates digital design and 3D printing into his restorative work, allowing for faster, more precise, and more comfortable dental restorations.

Outside of the operatory, Dr. Usmani has a particular interest in the relationship between oral health and sleep, including how airway issues can affect a person’s rest and long-term wellbeing. He’s especially drawn to treatments like mandibular advancement appliances, which can help patients struggling with obstructive sleep apnea find relief.

Beyond the Practice

When he’s not at the practice, Dr. Usmani enjoys hiking and camping his way through America’s national parks, cooking homemade pasta and dumplings from scratch, reading classic literature and biographies of famous painters, and teaching his cat, Byamba, new tricks. He also values the camaraderie of his dental team, who share a commitment to quality care and often celebrate together with birthdays, golf outings, and dinners.

What Is a General Dentist?

A general dentist is often the first and most consistent point of contact for a patient’s oral health throughout their life. General dentists are trained to diagnose, treat, and manage a wide variety of dental needs, from routine cleanings and exams to fillings, crowns, extractions, and more. Rather than focusing on a single specialty, general dentists like Dr. Usmani take a broad, comprehensive view of a patient’s oral health, coordinating care and helping patients navigate everything from preventative maintenance to more involved restorative work.

Because general dentists build long-term relationships with their patients, they’re uniquely positioned to notice changes over time, catch potential problems early, and tailor treatment recommendations to each patient’s individual needs, comfort level, and goals. For Dr. Usmani, being a general dentist means being a trusted partner in a patient’s overall health and confidence, one appointment at a time.
